                        Secrets for capturing EVP

There are many things that you can do to increase your success when trying to record Electronic Voice Phenomena or EVP.  The most important part is communicating to the spirits of the dead and tell them what you are doing and why you are recording.  Most people forget the fact that some people died long before recording devices were invented.  If you are investigating a house or cemetery that dates back to the mid to late 1800s you will be dealing with ghosts and spirits that might not understand the concept of what you are doing.  It is always important to explain to them what the recording device is for and where to speak into the microphone so that their voice can be recorded.

Most recorders have a red light that is on while it is actually recording.  This is a great way to tell the ghosts or spirits where they should speak into the device in order for us to hear them.  I always start out by stating the time, date, and location.  Always remember to leave a short time period of about 30 seconds before you state the time, date, and location.  This will give them time to speak as soon as the recording device is turned on.  It is very helpful to always play the recording sessions back when you are still at the location so the ghosts or spirits know that you can hear them on the recorder.  Most of the time EVPs that are captured right as you turn your recorder are from the second or third recording session at the same location because they then realize that their voice can be recorded.   It is recommended that you set the recorder down before you hit the record button.  If you hit the record button and then set your recorder down it will pick up a loud noise as the recorder hits the surface it is being placed on.  This will sometimes cover up the voices of the dead that speak very quickly when the recorder is first turned on.

When you state the time, date, and location you can then say, if there are any spirits in here to please speak into the recorder where the red light is, we can hear you on this device when we play it back!  We have almost doubled our results by saying this at the start of each recording session.  It is also helpful to say good bye when you get ready to quit recording.  Sometimes the spirits will say bye back to you!

Through research we have also found that it is not necessary to record for long periods of time.  It seems that most of the EVP that we record happens within, 3 to 5 minutes after the recorder has been turned on and sometimes even sooner!  It is very easy to go back and listen to your recording at the location if you only record for short periods of time as well.  That way they can hear you play it back like I stated above in this article.  It seems that the spirits of the dead are very curious as to why you are there so they will sometimes approach the recording device quickly and say something.  That statement is very true it seems when you use the vehicle method to record EVP.  Often with any method the ghosts or spirits will come to you and it is not necessary for you to go find them!

It is also very important to place the recorder so that it will pick up sound well so always make sure that the microphone is not pointed toward a wall or some other object that might block sound from entering in that direction.  The RCA model, RP 5012B digital recorder that my team and I use has a flat bottom that allows the recorder to be stood upright on most surfaces.  This might be another reason why we have been successful with this particular make and model.  It has a conference mode and a high quality setting that enables it to pick up sounds from all directions and not just one.  If the ghost or spirits speak from above the recorder it will also be picked up because the microphone is facing up.  Most other digital recorders are not flat on the bottom and do not allow the luxury of being stood upright.  They must be laid down on its side or propped up against something.  This sometimes puts the microphone in a sideways position and this might cause the recorder to not record a very faint voice spoken directly over it or from the opposite side that the microphone is pointed.

When recording always have a positive attitude!  If you try to conduct an EVP investigation with a negative attitude you will have poor results or attract negative ghosts or spirits, that might tell you to leave or get out.  This is not because they are evil it is because they keep their human emotions and characteristics even in the after life.  They are just people that no longer have their physical bodies and like us they get upset or even mad at those around them at different times.  So we must think positive when trying to record EVP.  You will have much better results and get messages with a lot more meaning to them.

It is also very important when recording that you do not make any sudden moves toward the recorder or get up real quick if setting down.  This might scare a ghost or spirit away that is just getting ready to speak into your recorder.  It seems some ghosts and spirits are shy and do not always talk on the first recording session but you might record several voices during the second session.  Some of the voices will get louder with time as well so let the spirits get comfortable around you and do not make sudden moves or be disrespectful to them in any way!

Another good tip or secret for successfully recording EVP is to pick out a place that feels right to you!  Go with your instinct and place the recorder on an object such as a tombstone or something else that has drawn your attention to it for some reason or another.  Often it is for a reason and you will record an EVP from that area!  Over time you will become more sensitive to the other side and areas will pop out at you almost like they are calling your name so pay attentions to these feelings because you will soon find that you can walk into a cemetery or other locations and just get a feeling for where to put the recorder or where not to put it.  I am not telling you to try and become a psychic but to just open yourself up more to the other side.
